Rossi’s Squash first team got their season of to a great start with a tight 3-2 victory over East Anglia 1 from Norwich. Rob ‘the hype’ Thirst had begged to be re-recruited into the team and played in a very mature manner at 3 seed to claim a 3-0 victory over Oli Coupe 13-8, 13-1, 13-10.
Local hero, Matt Sumner was next on court and quickly settled into his hard hitting game against Mark Rolfe winning a tight first game 15-13. However the tide turned in the following 3 games with Matt unable to find the tight lines and width that worked so well in the first. He went on to lose 3-1, 13-15, 13-11, 13-2, 13-8.
After flirting with other teams last season, Rossi’s welcomed back Martin ‘the doctor’ Guppy into the team. He was up against top regional women’s player Katie Lawrence. The opening two games were shared before Martin found his rhythm to take the match 3-1, 13-6, 8-13, 13-9, 13-8.
Tom ‘the beacon’ Smith was next on court against the talented Steve Dawson. A missed opportunity at game ball in the first was Tom’s only highlight as Steve’s skills proved too much and Tom went down to a 3-0 defeat, 13-15, 6-13, 7-13.
Matt ‘Showtime’ Bolt was last on court resuming his rivalry with Ashley Briggs with the fixture tied at 2-2, it was winner takes all. A tight opening game ensued with Bolt pinching it 13-11. Matt took one of his famous rest games in the next losing it 13-2. There was not much to split them in the following two with Matt making less mistakes to claim a 3-1 win 13-11, 2-13, 13-10, 13-10.
So an encouraging opening win for Rossi’s with room for improvement. They welcome Fakenham first team to North Walsham on Monday hoping to maintain their 100% start to the season.
